Palo Alto, CA - May 4th, 2003
I just updated the site for the first time using the new database. It's so easy. I know I'm harping on this, but it's going to save so much time and make things so much faster. Now I just need to get some sleep. I've been working on this all day. Nice way to spend a Saturday :(

Shoreline Cinema - May 4th, 2003
I saw 'Confidence' this afternoon with Dustin Hoffman and Edward Burns. I like movies where there's a big con game going on. I think this one was entertaining enough to be in the same company as 'House of Games' and 'The Sting.' Go check it out.

Palo Alto Cafe - May 10, 2003
Finally got past the security perimeter in the final level of James Bond: Nightfire. Sniper rifle and sneaky manuvering to the rescue.

Saw the Giants get creamed by the Expos. Not only beaten by Canadians, but French Canadians. Garlic fries are still tasting good though...

Sonoma, CA - May 24th, 2003
Went to a wedding in an old movie theater. Popcorn and Coke were served while you walked in for the ceremony. A slideshow of the couple was playing on the big screen. They got married with a giant red curtain behind them. Very cool, original wedding. Two thumbs up!

Palo Alto, CA - May 27th, 2003
I'm supposed to be going to a Coldplay concert this Friday but I realized I don't know any of their new songs. I wonder if Gwenyth Paltrow will be there.

I'm getting ready for a work trip to London. Once I'm there, I'm going to have one night where I stay out all night and do stuff. I plan on updating this journal as the night goes on. Hopefully I can get a video phone too and send photos or video of the night as it happens. How cool would that be? Stay tuned!

Palo Alto, CA - June 7th, 2003
The big news this week was that I got a phone that allows me to take pictures and short videos. This could change the face of the London trip. Hopefully I can figure out a way to get the pix and videos on the site easily. Otherwise, I'll send email updates live to the mailing list. So sign up if you haven't already.

Palo Alto, CA - June 16th, 2003
I'm in the preparing stage for my London trip. Over the weekend I purchased two disposable cameras for taking pictures during my adventures. I'll still be taking pictures from my phone, but the camera is for some higher quality and less technologically encumbered photos.

SFO - June 19 2003

Just got back from watching Douglas Coupland speak and read at Keplar's books in Menlo Park. I saw him almost ten years ago and he ended with a Krusty the Clown impression. This time he did Selma and the zitty french fry cashier. I like his books, you should go buy them too.

Palo Alto, CA - November 19th, 2003
The website has been down for about a week due to a billing mixup. I was panicked because I thought I was going to lose my entire database but I only ended up losing all my email. Which isn't really that bad because I never use that account except to send out updates. We're back online!

I just saw this headline and it made me laugh: "Marilyn Manson Faces Swiss Criminal Probe" Doesn't that sound like something Marilyn Manson would enjoy? Not only a probe, but a Swiss criminal probe.

New journal entries have been suspended until further notice. Please check out the archives to see fun pictures from around the world.

Menlo Park, CA - August 25th, 2004
Five months later and it's time to bring the journals back. I missed my chance to do updates from Japan, Singapore, Brazil and Shanghai. Am I purposely trying to make the site boring? London is around the corner so expect another round of cool photos and updates from my favorite city in the world.

Menlo Park, CA - August 25th, 2004
Happy 25th Melody! Have a Cosmo with that parrafin wax and Graduated Bob. (Now that's what I call Higher Headucation - bwa ha ha!)

My favorite part of the Abbey is the Coronation Chair. Some of the most prestigous asses in England's history have sat in that chair. Amazing when you consider it does't even recline.

This place is a sham. I dont see Julia Roberts anywhere. How am I supposed to spill my coffee on her then win her over with my charm if she isn't here?

Ate a waffle while listening to the terrible sound of street musicians. At least the waffle was good. Currently downing a pint before going to a movie.

Paddington / LHR - 9 10 2004
If you are going to leave London, leaving out of Paddington is the way to go. Maybe if Paddington was called something else like Thistle-Pancras, I wouldnt enjoy it as much. And the Thistle-Pancras Bear probably wouldnt ever have caught on.

Redwood Shores, CA - September 16, 2004
I was just thinking about how Donald Trump tells everyone on his show "You're fired!" But if the show is supposed to be a big job interview, then he really can't fire anyone. He can say "You're not hired!" Or "You're underqualified!" But I demand that Donald Trump stop firing people who are not his employees.

Redwood Shores, CA - September 30, 2004
I'm getting ready for the debate tonight. Apparently Bush will be on a step stool so he doesn't look short next to Kerry. Bush doesn't actually debate, he just repeats the same misinformation as usual. Kerry better learn the America doesn't like politicans smarter than they are. Sad that nuanced, intelligent positions get shot down by psudeo-cowboy taunts.

Menlo Park, CA - September 30, 2004
Just got done watching the first presidential debate. Kerry did everything he needed to. Bush showed he's incapable of expressing anything more complex than a bumper sticker.

Menlo Park - October 2, 2004
It's amazing how after the debate, all the news organizations gave a slight edge to Kerry, as if Bush did almost as well. Public polls all show voters thought Kerry did much better, something like 66% to 16%. If I were a bootlicking pundit for some cable news station, I'd be worried about getting paid so much to be so useless.

Redwood Shores - October 5, 2004
If I had to choose between being able to watch Mount St. Helens erupt or SpaceShipOne launch into space, I'd prefer to see SpaceShipOne launching off of Mount St. Helens to escape a giant plume of volcanic ash.

Best geologic anthropomorphization headline of the day: "Volcano Appears to Rest After Letting Off Steam"

Menlo Park - October 5, 2004
The Nobel Prize for Literature is supposed to be announced by Thursday. I'm pulling for Phillip Roth, although if you've read Portnoy's Complaint then you know maybe I shouldn't say "pulling" for him. Good luck, Mr. Roth!

Menlo Park, CA - October 6th, 2004
I've spent a few hours tonight doing crazy Google searches to figure out how to turn mikevogel.com into an RSS feed. Almost midnight and I've passed the RSS Validator! Validator sounds like a late 80's economy car model that never made it.

Menlo Park - October 7, 2004
Tonight, the Apprentice. Tomorrow, the Debates. I wish Donald Trump would bring George W. Bush into the Boardroom and take him to task for mismanaging America the past four years. Carolyn could tell Bush "You just can't admit you failed" in that warm, gentle way she has. Trump would say, "You mismanaged Iraq, you've failed on the homefront and divided the country. President Bush, you're fired!"

Palo Alto - October 9th, 2004
After watching the debate last night, I voted in two online polls (Fox & CNN) saying Kerry won. The response was around 88% for Kerry, surprising for the Fox/CNN crowd. But the headlines this morning say polls taken immediately after showed it was a virtual tie. It certainly makes a better news story if it's a close "horserace" as they like to call it. But why defend Bush's poor performance just because he's the incumbent? Sure, he did better than the first debate, but it would have been difficult to do worse.

Redwood Shores - October 12, 2004
With Sinclair Broadcast Group ordering affiliates to air an anti-Kerry documentary on public airwaves, it's just another case of Bush's corporate friends coming to his aid. Apparently Kerry's recent poll numbers and his promise to tax only those who make more than $200,000 has got them worried. I wonder if they'd be willing to air Fahrenheit 911 to keep things balanced?

Menlo Park - October 12, 2004
This election is consuming me. I find myself checking Yahoo! headlines for the latest polling numbers. I look forward to each debate like it's the Superbowl. I feel like an election addict and I'm going to either be elated or severely depressed when it's over. How anyone can still be undecided at this point is beyond me.

Menlo Park - October 17, 2004
If America has the best health care system in the world, then why are so many Americans buying their drugs from Canada and making bus trips up to Canada for the flu shot? Sure we have great doctors, but if you don't have insurance it's like telling a homeless person the restaurant they're begging in front of got Zagat's highest rating.

Redwood Shores - October 19, 2004
I don't see why everyone is making a big deal about whether Bush will re-instate the draft. He's already successfully avoided one draft.

Redwood Shores - October 25, 2004
About an hour ago, I saw a story that said Kerry had a one point lead in an ABC News poll. Now the story has disappeared and there's just the poll about Bush with a three point lead. I wonder how many of these polls include new voters, the ones eager to get Bush out?

Menlo Park - October 27, 2004
I'm becoming more convinced the befuddled Undecided Voters won't be the deciding factor in the election. It will be the newly registered voters, the ones who don't show up in the Zogby polls.

Menlo Park - November 1, 2004
I just a Reuters poll that gave Bush a one point lead. Really? One day before voting starts and you're doing a poll that everyone already knows is a statistical dead heat? Tomorrow is the only poll that matters, only this one includes new voters too. Kerry will win the popular vote by at least a million votes. Only the Electoral College or the House of Republicans, er, Representatives can over rule the majority of Americans. Or the Supreme Court. True Democracy in America is about fourth down on the list.

Menlo Park - November 1, 2004
I realize the networks are probably underplaying the whole Osama bin Laden videotaped message to Americans due to the election. How insane is it that ObL is telling Americans it's specific policies that make them hate America. Shocking, it's not that terrorists hate our Freedom, like Dubya insists. They love their freedom, hate our policies. I suppose 100,000 Iraqi civilians dead might be what you'd call bad policy.

Menlo Park - November 4, 2004
England is going to have a reality show where a human corpse decomposes over time. They are taking applications from terminally ill patients. Sad to see people literally dying to get on TV. Ba-dup-ching! The Fox version is going to be an X-treme version where they take the corpse bungee jumping, give it a nose job and swap organs with other corpses (Trading Livers). No word yet on what the prize is once the corpse fully decomposes without being fired by Donald Trump.

Menlo Park - November 11, 2004
It's now exactly 11:11 on 11/11. In case you don't know, 11:11 is the only time of day where all the numbers are the same on a digital clock. I'm not sure what it means, but it's kind of cool.

Menlo Park - November 11, 2004
As much as I'm trying to ignore post-election news and analysis, I found one thing that gave me hope. All the electoral maps you see on the news shows depict a sharply divided electorate. Red states, blue states. But someone at Princeton has made a map with finer gradation that shows a Purple America. A nice even blend of red and blue. Hopefully it's a coincidence that purple is also the color of a really deep bruise. http://www.princeton.edu/~rvdb/JAVA/election2004/purple_america_2004.gif

Menlo Park - November 25, 2004
Everyone knows today is the biggest eating day of the year. Tomorrow is Roto-Rooter's biggest toilet unclogging day of the year. They do twice as much business the day after Thanksgiving than any other day. Happy Thanksflushing!
